Emotional sensitivity is itself an embodiment of intelligence. People who are of extreme intelligence can go in one of two directions (or, paradoxically, both). They can either (i) ‘disaffect’ their intelligence—i.e. they can choose to deploy their intelligence in ways that do not resonate with emotion, e.g. they can go into engineering. Or (ii) they can choose to deploy their intelligence in ways that are not emotionally anti-septic and that, for that reason, require a high degree of affectivity (emotional sensitivity). The benefit of route-(i) is that there is lessened emotional pain. The downside is that there is lessened emotional and psychological intelligence (or highly circumscribed such intelligence). The downside of route-(ii) is that there is heightened emotional pain. The upside is that there is an immense gain in psychological insight.
