What is the scientific explanation of the thin line between madness and genius?

The so-called ‘mad’ genius is not in fact insane. What he is, is someone who marches to his own drummer—intellectually at first, and then morally. And somebody who marches to his own moral drummer is, of course, easily confused with someone who is insane.
