What were Freud’s main ideas on why we dream the things we dream?

Dreams are symbolic representations of repressed urges. Dreams express in pictures the desires and fears that we have but that we do not allow to enter consciousness when awake. So those repressed conceits express themselves in a way that is pictorial, symbolic, and archaic and, for those reasons, can enter into consciousness without immediately being seen for what they are and therefore without being automatically shoved back into the abyss of the unconscious.
